Premature Ejaculation - Causes and Cures

Definition of Premature Ejaculation

There is not a clear definition of this ailment. When a male succumb to an orgasm before he desires, say that is premature ejaculation.

There are studies that have determined the general amount of time from arousal to ejaculation is 5-10 minutes. To those who have a happy sex life this time is not a concern. The problem arises when the other partner has not been satisfied before ejaculation. This can be very irritating to both partners.

Is it Common?

Yes! Some estimates indicate that approximately 30 percent of American men ejaculate prematurely. As some couples are hesitant to talk about this problem, many men are unaware they have it. Premature ejaculation usually occurs in young men, the inexperienced, or new relationships.

What causes it?

The most common causes are excitement and/or anxiety. As such, a young man can have sex for the first time and be more likely to have premature ejaculation, because he can not control his response due to inexperience. Practice does make perfect. Also, when young people have sex they tend to worry about it being wrong, or getting caught. This can cause the male anxiety, causing premature ejaculation.

During adult years it can happen due to anxiety from many things, such as, avoiding pregnancy, outside stress, and fear of partner not being pleased. Rarely premature ejaculation is caused by physical disorders. However, there are some possible causes: multiple sclerosis, extreme sensitivity in penis, injury to nerves, and other neurological problems.

What are my options?

Basically, try to become more aware of your body and how you respond during sex from beginning to end. Take deep breaths to relax and reduce stress. Keep the whole body active using full body caresses and non genital touching.

Avoid using drugs and alcohol. Yes they can slow your response, however they will prevent you from developing the body awareness that will solve the problem for good. Thinking about other things can also be non productive for the same reason.

Some other things that might help would be:

  • Masturbation - Playing with yourself before intercourse would help prolong ejaculation the second time.
  • Stop and Start- Take a 20-30 second break before ejaculation. This works for a lot of people.
  • Squeeze Method- Like the above except when taking a break squeeze tip or middle of penis with thumb and forefinger for several seconds. Stop and wait 30 seconds then continue.
  • Lower position- The woman being on top helps many men because, they can relax more and it reduces the sensitivity in some men.

Many sex therapists concur that after weeks of practice one these methods will work in 95 percent of men.

What if these options don't work?

There are other ways to please your partner, such as using your fingers, toys, or oral sex before intercourse.

It is usually not a physical cause to this problem, therefore you can try using your master sex organ...your brain. Meaning a couple of sessions with a sex therapist may help you work these issues out and be able to relax.

If there is no improvement after a couple of months it may be a physical or emotional problem. Your doctor or therapist may prescribe anti-depressants, as noted side effect are decreased libido, and deferred orgasm.
